I rented a Nissan Altima or similar from Enterprise for this week in Illinois. When I arrived at Enterprise they told me the Altima I was supposed to take had a recall issued that morning, and they would need to give me a different car.

They gave me this:

I’m not certain, but it doesn’t seem like that should be similar to an Altima. They rented it to me for the price of the Altima, and waived the gas requirement, so I can bring it back on Empty. Not that it makes up for the difference in gas mileage, but the 5.7 v8 sounds better than whatever the Altima would have had.

They assured me that it had the same amount of interior space.

Same amount of interior space but now you have UNLIMITED trunk space.

We’re supposed to pick economy/compact cars for work. I've ended up with virtually every class of car at some point - including a cargo van! - but never a pickup. I honestly don't know if I've ever in my life driven one. That would be fun!

Well technically it doesn't have a power locking tailgate.

It says it has 4 wheel drive, but I can’t find a situation to test it in that won’t result in scratches from one end to the other. Other than that it’s been fun. Braking distance is a bit larger than my Accord.

The mpg indicator is great fun. Cruise at 60mph and it says I am getting 25mpg. Push down on the go pedal and watch it drop down to 5mpg.

...how could they justify giving you a cargo van? did they give you another option - you can take the PT Cruiser or this cargo van. Which do you want?

I’d call that a win of the rental car lottery!

Recently made the same reservation myself – let’s hope National will be as kind hehe

I fully support their idea of “or similar”!

That’s a mark in the win column.

Doesn’t it have those locking trunks on the sides of the bed? Or is that only if you option it up?

Pretty tiny, though.

I rented a “midsize/standard car” to drive to a vendor a few hundred miles away. Got to Enterprise, and they had a subcompact, and a Ram 1500 HEMI Quad Cab. Guess which one I picked.

It was a perfect storm. I’d rented from Ace, who said I could wait a couple hours if I wanted an actual car. No one else had walk-up reservations available. Or if I was desperate (which I was) they could go grab something from their van rental facility down the road. I’d flown into San Jose and had to be somewhere 1.5 hours away, inspect a property, and get right back to the airport, so I took the van.

I think some of my coworkers routinely get trucks with thrifty’s “wild card” option. I always get minivans. I wonder if it's just a sexist thing?

You mean it does have the power locking tailgate. I hear it click every time I walk up and hit unlock. I find it hilarious to have a locking tailgate when there is no cover/topper to keep stuff ‘inside.’
